Merin Kuruvilla, MD

Merin Kuruvilla, MDQ: Why did you become an allergist?

A: I was nearing the end of my second year IM residency and trying to find the subspecialty that was the best fit for me, when I heard Dr. Raymond Slavin deliver a grand rounds presentation on the intersection of Art and Medicine. I found it so intriguing that I sought out an allergy elective to work with him.

During this two-week rotation, I was most impressed by his passion for the field and the fulfillment he found from his work even 50 years later. It was very different from anything I had seen before as an IM resident. This compelled me to explore the specialty further and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it.

More than seven years into my own journey as an allergist, I can see why Dr. Slavin was so happy and fulfilled. It has been wonderful and exciting to see the field evolve and I could not be more pleased with my career choice.
